Malcolm Brogdon Ends Nine-Year NBA Journey with Retirement Announcement

After nearly a decade in professional basketball, Malcolm Brogdon has officially announced his retirement from the NBA. The veteran guard, who played nine seasons, confirmed the decision in a heartfelt statement to ESPN’s Shams Charania on October 15, 2025.

A Career of Achievement and Resilience

Selected as the No. 36 pick in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks, Brogdon already made history early on when he became the first player drafted outside the first round to win Rookie of the Year since 1966.

Over his career, he played for multiple franchises — including the Bucks, Indiana Pacers, Boston Celtics, Portland Trail Blazers, Washington Wizards, and briefly signed with the New York Knicks before deciding to step away from the court.

Brogdon’s stat line across 436 games is solid: he averaged around 15.3 points, 4.7 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game in about 29.1 minutes of play. He also earned accolades such as the Sixth Man of the Year award during his time with Boston.

The Retirement Decision

In his announcement, Brogdon reflected on the many sacrifices and rewards of his basketball journey:

“I have proudly given my mind, body and spirit to the game over the last few decades. With the many sacrifices it took to get here, I have received many rewards.”

He emphasized gratitude for reaching this point “on my own terms,” and expressed a desire to transition into this new phase of life surrounded by family and friends.

Though he had signed with the New York Knicks just days before the announcement, Brogdon opted not to join the active roster this season, instead choosing to focus on his well-being and future pursuits.

Legacy and Influence

Brogdon’s impact went beyond mere numbers. He was known for his basketball IQ, defensive tenacity, and steady presence. As someone who broke through draft expectations and built a respected career across several teams, his journey is often cited as a model of perseverance and consistency.

His awards and honors include the Rookie of the Year (2016–17) and Sixth Man of the Year (2023), reflecting his adaptability and influence in different roles.

Looking Ahead

While his professional playing days may be over, the next chapter for Brogdon is full of possibility. He leaves the league with a reputation for professionalism, character, and a body of work that many rising players will look up to.

In retirement, he’ll have the chance to cultivate new pursuits, whether in basketball (coaching, analysis, mentorship) or entirely new ventures. His intention to walk away on his own terms speaks to a thoughtful and intentional closing of a significant life chapter.
